Remediating Social Media: Why Layers Still Matter for Internet Policy - Response

Remediating Social Media: Why Layers Still Matter for Internet Policy  – Annemarie Bridy Area 1:    The purpose of this reading from Annemarie Bridy is ultimately to present the argument that a "must-carry" obligation, although it may make sense in the larger sense of the internet in some ways, is not the best solution to remedy the current issues with social media.  This argument is explored in three separate sections: the history and context of internet regulation, the current culture and failures of social media and it users, and the proposed cornerstones of social media moderation. As social media has shifted to a tool for harassment, political advancement, and other anti-social behaviors, Bridy argues that the way it is ran by executive positions must change as well.       Area 2:    As I read this journal, particularly the section on selective enforcement of moderation by social media platforms, I was instantl...

Metaphors We Live By Response

Metaphors We Live By – George Lakoff and Mark Johnson Area 1:    The excerpts given to us from Lakoff and Johnson’s Metaphors We Live By explore the idea of metaphor as it relates to cultural attitudes, our collective subconscious, and high-inference language. Area 2(ish?):    As I read these excerpts, I found the implications of the loaded language associated with our everyday activities very interesting to note. As a culture, why is it that certain situations are associated with v...

Self Introduction

Hi everyone! My name is Kyle Kopta, and I am a senior in the DTC program. I moved here to the Tri-Cities from Hermiston last year to start this program, and I’ve loved it so far! I’ve taken to photography and video the most, but I love to explore new ideas and mediums whenever I have the opportunity to. I am also currently working as the ASWSUTC Graphic Designer, which has opened up many opportunities and learning experiences for me in the field.    In my free time, I love watching movies and listening to music. My favorite artists are David Bowie, The Smiths, and Radiohead. Over the years, I’ve accumulated a fairly large collection of records and cassettes, and it grows every year (even though my wallet doesn’t appreciate it most days).    Over the course of my time in this program, the classes that exposed me to new concepts and pushed me out of my comfort zone have proved to be the most worthwhile. As I look over the topic we will be discuss...
